Why is metalcraft such a vital industry?

If you think of metal fabrication then you probably picture a noisy and old fashioned industry. Modern metalworking companies certainly still do some things in a very traditional way. Sheet metal working and metal fabrication are terms that still remind us of a bygone age when skills like this were employed in heavy industries building ships and the like, but a modern metal worker is also just as likely to be found programming a computer to carry out precision cutting of metal or using a CAD modelling system to produce a 3D model of a product even before a piece of metal is touched.

One such metalworking company is Red Box Engineering. As a company they have been around for over 50 years, but are now using computer modelling processes to offer a complete "concept to completion" service which means that even before a piece of metal is worked a complete 3D modelled version of the product can be created on computer and the most cost effective methods of construction can be calculated.

In summary then, metalwork has both remained a skill that uses traditional methods and has also changed greatly to make use of modern technology.

Why is metalcraft such a vital industry even today?

metal craftIt's the case that modern metalworking companies certainly still do some things in a traditional way. The image of a metal worker surrounded by noise and heat is one that can certainly still be seen readily enough today, but a modern day metal worker is also just as likely to be found programming a computer to carry out precision cutting of metal or using CAD software to produce a 3D model of a product even before a piece of metal is touched.

Most metal fabrication companies who have survived have had to adapt to newer ways of working like this. This allows them to create metalwork products in a much shorter time, either because the design part of the process is now carried out entirely on computer or because some parts of the process can now be carried out by computer controlled machinery. An example of one such company is Red Box Engineering - company website - who have been around for 50+ years and yet now are able to take old existing paper drawings or even designs with no existing drawings at all and remodel them into highly accurate computer models that they can then use to recreate the product again in solid metal form.

As you can see then, metalwork is a traditional industry that is still very much in use today, even though it has certainly evolved due to modern technology
